Honda Main Relay

The Honda Main Relay operates the fuel pump as well as supplies power to the fuel injectors. Without  the Honda Main Relay in proper working condition, your car will literally not move. This critical device is prone to failure due to cracked solder, which results in intermittent/nonexistent current flow to the fuel pump or the injectors.

How to Test Your Honda Main Relay:

  1. Remove the main relay.
  2. Attach the battery positive terminal to the No. 4 terminal and the battery negative terminal to the No. 8 terminal of the main relay. Then check for continuity between the No. 5 terminal and No. 7 terminal of the main relay.
If there is continuity, go on to step 3.
If there is no continuity, replace the relay and retest.
  3. Attach the battery positive terminal to the No. 5 terminal and the battery negative terminal to the No. 2 terminal of the main relay. Then check that there is continuity between the No. 1 terminal and No. 3 terminal of the main relay.
If there is continuity, go on to step 4.
If there is no continuity, replace the relay and retest…. read more about the Honda Main Relay

Integra CV Joint – All You Need to Know

Constant-velocity joints (aka homokinetic or Integra CV joints) let a rotating shaft transmit power via a variable angle, at constant rotational speed, without an appreciable increase in friction or play. They are primarily utilized in front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars. Rear wheel drive cars with independent rear suspension typically use CV joints at the ends of the rear axle halfshafts, and increasingly use them on the propshafts.

These joints are very durable, and are  highly over specified for a given application. Maintenance is usually limited to checking that the rubber gaiter (dust/weather boot) that covers them is secure and not split. If the gaiter is broken, the molybdenum disulphide grease with which the joint is packed will be thrown out. The joint will then pick up dirt, water, and road deicing salt and cause the joint to overheat and wear. The grease can also contaminate the brakes. In worst case, the CV joint may disjoin causing the vehicle to cease moving or lock up, rendering the car incapable of steering. Damaged CV joint gaiters will usually cause a car to fail a vehicle inspection.

Auto Repair – Air Pressure Tips and Tricks

Your tires are your vehicles main accessories! They need to be inspected and maintenanced (rotation and balanced) regularly in order to keep your vehicle running fluidly. MechanixTrix has the know-how to assist you in keeping your vehicle running smoothly:

Find the right air pressure to run in your tires on pavement. Find some smooth concrete and wet a section about 3 feet wide by 8 feet long. Over inflate your tires and drive through the water and see how much tire is making contact with the ground by looking at the pattern of water left on the concrete. Air down until the water pattern and your tread width measure the same.
Note: front and rear tire pressure may not be the same.

Questions and Answers with MechanixTrix – Brake Dust Prevention

Question for MechanixTrix:

I clean of my $50,000 car weekly, but it is so difficult to remove the brake dust. This problem really hinders the appearance of my car! How do I prevent brake dust?

Answer from MecanixTrix:

Nothing looks worse than a relatively clean $50,000 car with black, grimydwheels. European luxury sedans are notorious for having dirty front wheels because of the black dust that’s generated by their disc brake pads. The dust sticks to the alloy wheels giving them an unsightly appearance.

There’s no way to eliminate brake dust entirely because all friction linings are designed to wear. If the pads didn’t wear, they’d soon chew up the rotors – and pads are a lot cheaper to replace than rotors.
