Caring for your First Horse with Pine Shavings

If you recently purchased your first horse, you may need to be brushed up on a few need-to-know facts about owning a horse. The first thing that you need to know is that horses, by nature, are social animals that need plenty of time outdoors. You will find that the more time a horse spends in the stable, the more the stable will need to be cleaned (mucked)

Your horse will call for shelter to protect it from wind, rain, and the sun. A natural grove of trees provides great shade, but for shelter from the elements, a three-sided enclosure functions the best. Be sure your shelter is big enough to allow all your horses to fit inside together, and shape it so the back wall faces the prevailing wind.

Horses need a continuous supply of fresh, clean water. If you want to use a watering bucket, you must refill it at least twice daily and whenever it is empty. Setting the bucket inside a tire will hold it from being easily tipped over. A watering trough, supplied by a pipe, is better, but must be checked during winter weather to ensure the pipe and water surface have not frozen.

Proper bedding is critical for horses kept in a barn or stable. Horses should not stand all day on a hard floor, and they will lie down to nap or rest. Pine Shavings are a popular bedding choice because it is inexpensive, warm, and comfortable. Dust-free pine shavings are clean and hygienic. You can also apply rubber matting for a comfortable resting and standing surface, but you should put pine shavings on top of it to allow heat.

Your horse is your prized pet – but let’s face it, if it is stabled during the day, then there is a little extra work needed. Horses that are kept in stables for even a few hours of the day require their stables to be mucked or cleaned daily.  Inhaling ammonia from urine saturated bedding can be harmful to your horse’s or pony’s sensitive lungs. Not only is it dangerous for your horse, it is also unpleasant to work in and smelly for you too.

Wear Appropriate Attire

Gloves, boots and jeans can protect your skin from blisters and other hazardous chemicals.

Be Sure to do a Good Job!

Be sure to remove all dirty pine shavings from your horses bedding. Check underneath to make sure that everything is dry and clean.

Once you’ve removed all the manure and dirty pine shavings, spread the clean pine shavings back over stall area. Double check all corners and areas to make sure that everything is clean and dry.  Distribute the clean pine shavings evenly.

Pine Shavings – Horses and Pets

Horses are the number one animal in many local communities. They are easy to care for and they are perfect friends. As A Matter Of Fact, they are virtually like people with their individual personalities. However, looking after your horse is a great duty and your horse must be cared for properly to  it healthy and happy. To offer the proper level of attention for your horse, you can think of it as being a child of about 4 years old because this is equivilent to  their level of mental capacity.

The number one thing that you will want for your horse is a dwelling. This could be a stable or a paddock. If you do not have somewhere big enough for your horse to live at your house, you may want to look into  agistment or a place that rents out stables or land for horses to live. You will need to maintain your horse’s home sanitized by taking out his droppings everyday for stables and weekly for pasture. Pine shavings are widely recommended in stables. Pine Shavings are cost effective, fresh scented and eco-friendly.

There are also numerous daily duties that you will make as an owner. The first is feeding your horse. If you have your horse in a stable, you will need to feed it grains and chaff, as well as hay and make the stable comfy for it by providing sawdust or pine shavings for bedding. Horses also need large amounts of fresh clean drinking water.

Your horse will demand to be warmed frequently and just as people horses require to have regular medical exams from a vet, even if they are not sick, to verify that they are safe. If you have any fears about your horse or what to give it or how much, your vet will also be able to help you.

During the winter months, it might be necessary to supply a rug for your horse, especially if the winter months are particularly cold. Horses that rest in stables will also call for to have rugs for the evening as they can not move around to keep warm.
